Pre-Baptism Classes
Parents are required to attend three sessions. Once the sessions have been completed, Baptisms will be scheduled for the 1st weekend of the month, depending on the Mass that the family will attend. On the actual day of the Baptism, parents are asked to be present at least 20 minutes before Mass begins and inform the priest that you are there for the Baptism.
Session One:
* Why we consider children gifts from God
* Discernment Survey (Knowwledge of Catholic Faith and Commitment to Faith)
* Review of the Sacraments (purpose, effects and what they accomplish)
* Baptism as a Sacrament
* Effects of Baptism
* Why the Church insists on infant baptisms
* Concept model of the conversion process
* Concept of Original Sin
* Concepts of Sin
* Root of Sin
* Effects of Sin
* Difference between mortal and venial sin
* What the Church asks of parents in the training of their children in lived faith
Session Two:
* Discussion of what parents most hope for their children
* Discussion on "What Faith Is"
* Our Salvation Story and why it is important for children to learn it
* Three communities which are paramount in helping to build a child's faith (salvation
story, famiy faith story, marriage story)
Session Three:
* Brief revisit of the definition of Baptism
* Signs and symbols of Baptism
* Historical journey of an early Christian to the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation
and Eucharist (Purpose is to buid understanding of the origins of many of the
customs and symbols associated with the rituals of Baptism, Confirmation, and
Eucharist, provide emphasis on the communal aspect of the initiation process of
early Christians, show how seriously early Christians took Baptism and initiaion
process)
* Discussion on why Jesus took Baptism
* Discussion on, "Is Baptism Necessary?"
* Discussion on what caused the disconnection of the sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist
* Discussion on the role of Godparents
* Considerations in choosing Godparents
* Requisites for Godparents
